Clomid vs HCG
Clomid and HCG are compared here on the things that actually differ between them: what class each belongs to, what each acts on, how each is supplied and what each costs per milligram. Where the registry has no figure for one of them the row is left out rather than filled in.
Side by side
| Clomid | HCG | |
|---|---|---|
| Class | Selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM) | Gonadotropin analogue |
| Acts on | A SERM comprising two isomers, enclomiphene and zuclomiphene, with differing half-lives and receptor behaviour. Raises gonadotropin output by blocking hypothalamic oestrogen feedback. | A glycoprotein hormone that acts as an LH mimetic at testicular Leydig cell receptors, stimulating testicular steroidogenesis directly rather than through the pituitary. |
| Supplied as | Oral tablet. | Lyophilised powder supplied in international units, or pre-filled pen. |
| Half-life | Mixed: the zuclomiphene isomer persists far longer than enclomiphene, which is why washout is prolonged. | Biphasic; the terminal phase is approximately 30 hours. |
| Storage | Cool, dry, dark. | Lyophilised: cool and dry. Reconstituted: refrigerated, and the diluent used matters for stability. |

What actually differs
The clearest difference is class: Clomid is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM), HCG is a gonadotropin analogue. They are not supplied the same way. Clomid comes as an oral tablet, HCG as a lyophilised powder supplied in international units, or pre-filled pen. Half-life differs as well: Mixed: the zuclomiphene isomer persists far longer than enclomiphene, which is why washout is prolonged for Clomid against Biphasic; the terminal phase is approximately 30 hours for HCG.
